Summary of the final and determining game for the season
It was a very exciting last game for Tesfa this season, as their last game with Maitemenai also would reveal the winner of this year’s Division A. Prior to the game, Tesfa were in first place on the ranking table, 2 point ahead of the opponent Maintemenai. Despite being favorites, the game turned out to be very challenging for the team.
It was a very cool start from both sides as both teams were trying to gain the confidence for this huge match. Only after 3 minutes, the shape of the game changed when Maitemenai got a clear penalty and scored the first goal of the game. From that moment Tesfa had more possession but they never managed to put real pressure on Maitemani’s defense. In the second quarter of the game Tesfa suffered another big blow due to an unfortunate error by the goalkeeper. In order to clear the goal, the goalkeeper tried to control the ball on his chest, but by mistake set the ball in the feet of his opponent’s forward who took advantage of the open goal. Suddenly, after only 17 minutes, the score was 2-0 against Tesfa.
These two early episodes of the game gave Maitemenai real confidence, and they started to control the game with some one to one passes. Despite this, in 36 minutes Tesfa got a new opportunity to once again gain back their confidence. The referee awarded a penalty as Maitemani’s defense touched the ball inside their own goal area. Daniel (Shekoe), who has had an eye catching performance in the earlier games, was in charge of the penalty, but the goalkeeper managed catch the shot. It was definitely not Tesfa’s day and the first half ended 2-0.
In the second half Tesfa made a strategic change of players, and put on Amanuel, who is a creative midfielder, to try to threaten the well organized Maitemani’s defense. However, Maitemenai was in a great mode and the new effort did not provide the desired results. Only ten minutes into the second half, Tesfa was once again set back by a goalkeeper mistake. The goalkeeper was out of his goal line when the ball was with Maitemani’s striker, and the best player of the match was once again in a proper position to volley the ball into the net. To prevent the team from giving up, the coach Asmerom, tried to encourage the team to throw the ball into the side of the opposition to create some good opportunities, but there was no success and the game ended 3-0 to Maitemani.
